If you don’t truly understand the problem and who you are solving for, then you are only designing for yourself. I believe good design is grounded in research and that design is a continuously iterative process. Sticking to the 4 D’s of the double diamond (Discover, Define, Design, Deliver) helps me to stay focused and deliver solutions that converge at the intersection of user needs and business goals.
